President Obama’s Back to School Message

This afternoon President Obama spoke to you, the schoolchildren of America, to encourage you to take responsibility for your learning. The President challenged you to set goals, try hard and not to be afraid of failure.

For those of you who have enjoyed this site you might want to venture over to the President’s new blog on the new white house site. Very ambitious proposals to connect us to the administration as part of the goals of communication, transparency and participation. Can you tell Mr. Obama used to be a teacher?

Also, I had this great idea to put the inaugural address into wordle….apparantly not such an original idea because even though I went on around 1 pm yesterday many others had beat me to it and it was already posted on news sites like BBC:

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West – know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

For those of you who went to bed at a decent hour here are the speeches from Election Night. I can not help but think of all the people around the world who have suffered violence in order to force change in their governments, both past and present. Last night we were witnesses to democracy in action.

McCain’s concession speech—pay attention to 9:45-10:45 which is the closing lines of his address. We will be learning what McCain means by those lines in the months ahead.
