Last year a student sent me this link (hint, hint). The clip is from the 10th anniversary celebration—so from 1990 I guess? You will hear “Do You Hear the People Sing” sung in several languages. It is beautiful to listen to all these different words, yet the message of the song is not “lost in translation.”

However, upon further inspection you will notice that all of the countries represented—all of the countries for whom Les Miserables carries a special meaning—are democracies. So really does this story unite the world or just people who share an ideology?

Watch this clip from today’s Meet The Press where the panelists discuss the right vs. left in America today. Keep in mind that our country was founded on the ideals of liberalism as they saw it 200+ years ago. So, really we are all “liberal” in the United States, but within our liberal belief system are divisions we have labeled: conservative, liberal and socialist. What are the pros and cons of having such ideological clashes?

We’ve talked in here about how differently artistic messages can be interpreted. (Btw–the Pearl Jam song I couldn’t think of is “Alive.”) During one the interviews I saw (CBS Sunday Morning, I think) Billy Armstrong revealed that “Wake Me Up When September Ends” is really about the death of his father in the early 80s–not September 11th as everyone else takes it to mean. So how about this one? What is it really about? What message is in it for you?

]]> http://buell.edublogs.org/2009/04/17/twitter/feed/ 12 Living the Dream http://buell.edublogs.org/2009/04/16/living-the-dream/ http://buell.edublogs.org/2009/04/16/living-the-dream/#comments Thu, 16 Apr 2009 10:17:59 +0000 buell http://buell.edublogs.org/?p=128 By the time you get to my blog over vacation you’ve probably already seen or heard about Susan Boyle and her performance on the British equivalent of American Idol.  Still….it’s just soooo good so I had to post.  Plus, she sang a Les Miserables song….if you see the You Tube version (which has disabled embedding) you can view the lyrics.  In the musical, Fantine sings this song at the beginning of play after her secret –that she has a daughter when she is not married — is discovered and she is fired from her factory job.  But really these lyrics can apply to anyone older who expected something different from life and no doubt Susan Boyle herself.   You won’t be in tears the way people my age are….but I think you will appreciate her passion and her talents–and never giving up on your dreams.

You can hear the opinions of Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy and also Moby and Wyclef Jean. Several people are asked to answer the same question–for example, “Does the free market corrode morality?” Go to the sites linked above and view some of the responses.

This clip from Chester Finn an education expert (see bio) speaks to some of the same questions you have been posing to me about your high school educations.  Thoughts?  Comments?
