Why Museums Need Security ~ Shooting at Holocaust Museum

Her Story

Terribly sad day at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum…R.I.P. Stephen Johns, and please don’t ever take security guards for granted. Lots of school groups at the Museum, including at least 3 from Massachusetts. Here is the news story (from my old station in Wash, D.C. actually).

yeah i read about it when i was checking my emails i heard the guy who shot there tried to kidnap someone a while back?
Since its DC and white house was near by there should have been better security.

This is such a sad event, and this goes to show that museums security guards are very important in protecting the people in the museum.

Mrs. Buell I saw this on the news the other day, and it is so sad. Security at places like that are already tight, so i can only imagine what it will be like now. I remember when I went to D.C. in December, I went to the pentagon and security was rediculous. I had a little wristlet with my phone in it and they made me put it through the scanner things that they have at the airports. Also, you were only allowed to be in groups of a maximum 3 people, so my Uncle had to sort of talk the guards into letting us in, haha. I guess its pretty bad that they actually let us in, we could have been like the guy who shot the guard or been planning to blow the place up.

In general, I think that it is a shame that museums need security. It’s only common sense, and courtesy not to disrespect or vandalize the contents within these museums. Trying to shoot or kill people is illegal (in the U.S) so why would it be okay for someone to try to do it in a museum? Like seriously, come on. I think that it is awful that the security guard, who is trying to protect the museum and the people spending their money to visit it, died. I feel sorry for his family and especially for his son. It’s somewhat incredible that a place with such high tech security would be the host of a shoot out tragedy. When I heard about it on the news, I didn’t know what to think. It really makes you wonder if you’re truly safe in your own country.

I get that the man doing the shooting was very antisemetic, but what would he have gained from getting inside the museum?

That’s really unfortunate for the guard and his family. As for the shooter, you can’t deny history, you can’t make it look fake, there’s videos, pictures, victims, memorials and a museum of these events. And shooting security isn’t going to do anything to change that. Germany, the country who even LEAD the act is responsible and they admit to the actions of the Holocaust and are ashamed and extremely sorry for all that’s happened. I guess I do pay attention in German…

I thought this was so sad! The poor guy and his family are going to be tramatized for life. They should definatley have something before the check in now just incase there are more anti-semestic people going to this museum.

After watching this video, I was extremely sad. I feel so terrible for the pooy guy that was shot and for his family. His family will never be the same again. They will have to live with this sadness for the rest of thier lives. I can’t believe that anyone would do anything catastrophic like this. I was ashtonished to hear about the anti-semitism people as well. I found it very ironic(in a sad way) that the family thought this was a safer occupation than working in a prison. Sometimes life is just not fair at all.

this has nothing to do with the holocaust museum but i saw this commercial for subway on tv and the music in it was the 1812 overture. just thought that was funny, the music goes with the commercial perfectly :)
