I think it’s great that Poland has come so far in both its government and technology. Their nonviolent approach that paid off for gaining independence probably helped them get a good start. Unlike other countries that had to fight wars that distroyed cities, land, the economy, and moral, Poland held their ground with words, not weapons. They were smart to take the nonviolent route that the Pope inspired.
(Is that quote of the day comming from you, Buell? “Youth is wasted on the young.” That’s kind of harsh. Youth saved Czechoslovakia from Russian Communism!)

No, QOTD is from a Famous Quotes website…..the meaning of the quote has more to do with the fact that when you are young you kind of take things for granted—like this fabulous education you are getting for example. This really is a very wonderful time in your lives—though you don’t always see it that way. However, Cadence, I think you make an excellent point about youth starting revolutions :)

I also agree with Cadence on how Poland has taken the nonviolent approach and how it did pay off. But the some reason why the Polish did not want to be communist were because of how bad the econymy was for instance. I have some Polish money from when they were communist and the 1000 zlotych note is worth around $0.75. And today after communism 1 zlotych is around $0.75. But there is also the fact that in Poland you were not really free and Poland was not really free. They had to listen to everything the Solviets told them to do. And the people did not like that at all.

I think that it is awsome that democracy really allowed the citizens of Poland to express thier opions about thier counrty and get the full in side stoires without censorship. Communist really seemed to be the chains for freedeom for so long and its great that those chains were broken.

It is so nice to see how far Poland has come in the last 20 years. They have really been able to turn their country around. Today if you look around Warsaw you might find some statues in honor of communist leaders, but if you look around at the people and the life style there are no traces of communism. I’m glad that they could become free and become the people they always wanted to be.

i thought it was interestin to see how much Poland had changed. i especially liked the non-violent approach. i think that more countries should take this approach. it could save money and lives by not going to war.

The methods that Poland used to become free were very interesting because a peaceful, non-violent approach was unheard of at the time. If someone wanted results, they would have to fight back with gun in hand. However, the Pope inspired a peaceful revolution and it most definitely paid off.

I agree with Kurt. It makes me happy to know that people from Poland can express their feelings without the fear of being killed. I dont really like Communist countries because people dont really know what is goiing on and I think they have the right to know and say something about it.

They have made great progress in the twenty years. Before 1989 they didn’t have the right to really even speak with out being in fear. They were also only hearing propaganda. Now Poland is a very succesful country. Democracy always seems to make countries that are struggling strive in the future.

I guess i never realized that we only have tv and newspapers and media because we are free and have a democracy. It is wierd to think of what it would be like if we didn’t have those luxuries or were censored like China. I’m glad that Poland now has free media and does not face propaganda like they used to, since this was not true while they were communists.

  • 15    Stephanie Giuffrida // Jun 10, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Free media such as uncensored television, newspaper, and internet is where people in democracies world wide retrieve their knowledge, but imagine China with their censored media and Poland facing Propaganda. Imagine how much more informed they would be if they had free media. I am happy to see Poland no longer faces propaganda.

its good that Poland has improve from 20 years ago. the technology is better now and people don’t need to think that they would die because of what they say or do.

Poland had quite the change, and I think it’s for the better. (Maybe with a little American bias) I think that democracy is the best form of government. I think that maybe we take democracy, and all the luxuries that come along with it (voting, free press, free speech) for granted sometimes. Successful peaceful revolutions are always a bonus.

I thought it was interesting on how Poland has come over the past 20 years. They have found a non-violent approach that works with the people, and through becoming a democracy, they have finally achieved a state of peace.
