What do you think of this? A new British education plan is calling for topics like Queen Victoria and World War II to be dropped from the curriculum in favor of teaching students how to Twitter and blog? Don’t they know students can do both, lol?

When I first read this topic I was like what? Why would schools stop teaching topics like Queen Victoria and WWII? But then I clicked on the linked and read a little bit about their plans. Now, I feel that teaching the students in primary schools about twitering and blogging is not that bad. After I read what their proposals would require I don’t think it will be that much different than what students are already doing. I guess if the students really wanted to learn about topics such as WWI, then they could take that history elective when they are in high school. If they stopped teaching topics like this in high school that would be a whole different story because it doesn’t allow students to take courses they may want to take later in their college careers.

Learning to blog is not important as their own history. The students need to know about important people who helped the country like Queen Victoria. World War II is something every country involved need to know about. The history is something needed to remember in honor of those who fought.

i think it’s ok for them to take away learning about queen victoria and WWII in the primary schools as long as they learn about it sooner or later, like in middle school but it would be good for them to know how to use wikipedia, twitter, and to know how to blog etc. before they enter middle school so they will know how to take advantage of their resources better, if they know how to use the resources better they’ll be able to get their work done faster upon entering middle school and have more experience in computers. it’s good for them to be able to use their resources well for help on writing papers and when needing help w/ hw, “instead of asking my mom i can just look it up on google or wikipedia”

I think Tommy is right. Learning to Twitter and blog are not as important as learning about ones history. As long as they learn abou their history at some point i think it would be smart to teach younger kids to get use to the infomation found on their technologies. Though, like Shawna said, if they do not learn about these things it would change the course of their future. I personally believe that if they teach these younger students how to twitter and blog it will detach them because instead of asking their parents they would rely directly on the internet and everything on the internet is not always true. I think it would be better as a seperate course in like middle school, like how we had a computer class in 5th grade before we took on World Cultures. I do believe this is a good plan for their education system but i think it wil change many things about the future ciriculum and other parts of school.
