“Hope We Make It Through the New Year”
I just finished looking through all of the news stories you wrote about and questions you asked and I have to say news was depressing. From an historical perspective, however, these sure are interesting times. Instead of writing a post I decided to put up some recent editorial cartoons. You may choose any one you’d like and comment on the artist’s message.

I would like to comment on the…. 2nd one, the one with the big eye bomb. Well first of all and I know it sounds crazy but I think it is pretty funny (the drawing I mean); what I think this pic represents is how the country that are on war right now are only fighting so they can get their revenge back at the ones they are bombing (I really dont know if this makes sence) but I do have a question about it, I dont know if they know the reason of why they are bombing each other, but it might be because they want more power? or because they want their religion to win? or maybe they dont have a cause at all?
I dont know if this helps but : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7809371.stm
“Israel released video of an air attack on 28 December, which appeared to show rockets being loaded onto a lorry. The truck and those close to it were then destroyed by a missile.”
That is what this link is about.
I think that the first cartoon is trying to say that with all the economic and political changes made in 2008, 2009 will definitely make for an interesting year and may not guarantee a smile on everyone’s face.
The stories I looked at were depressing but I agree that it is interesting to learn about what is happening in other countries during the holiday season. I think the first cartoon is funny. Many bad things happened in 2008 and there were a lot of people that barely made it through the year. I think and hope that 2009 will be better and I think that with a new president, changes will be made in a lot of places. I also liked the third cartoon. Obviously the economy (especially towards the end of the year) was not good and made records for the lowest its ever been. Again, with Obama coming in I think that he will try many ways to save our economy before it crashes. I think these two cartoonists found bad things that happened in 2008 and put it in a cartoon so people can actually laugh at what happened. Its their way of saying 2008 is over, let’s just put it aside, and focus on what we can do in 2009 that will make it better. The fourth cartoon pretty much sums up what has been in the news for the past two weeks. Gaza and Hamas have been bombing each other and even though it is in the Middle East, the United States is still involved. We are on the Israelites side and I just hope that it all ends soon.
I agree with cartoon 2, I don’t think we should be fighting in Iraq.
These cartoons are funny in which how they relate to the hard times. The first cartoon is saying how the economy and everything is going to be tough and we need to try our hardrest to get through it. Most these cartoons are relating to the world and tough time, so let’s try to get through them and have a good 2009!
This new year should be interesting with the state of our economy, a new president, and the world on the verge of World War III.
I agree with paige. 2009 is going to be a tough year with the war, the inauguration of a new president, the economy, etc. Let’s hope Obama can lead us out of this hole we are in and make it a good 2009.
The ball drop shows that the artist feels that nobody is really ready for 2009 and we all believe everything is just going to explode in our faces.
Mike Jordan, I doubt that many people want to be in Iraq right now, but like these pictures are displaying, we must do it slowly because everything takes time and eventually the economy will come around like it always does. Just let things sort out and hope we make it through the new year.
all of these pics are depressing. is this what we really have to look forward to in 2009?
The first cartoon says that with all the changes that are occuring 2009 is definently going to be a diffucult and interesting year and that not everyone may be happy
This coment is for the first picture….this is saying that 2009 is going to be a hard year with the economy and the new presidents and everything else that is going on…
Thsi comment is for the first cartoon….this is saying that 2009 is going to be a hard year with the econmoy, the new president, and everthing else that is going on in the world..
i agree i hope we make it through the new year too!!!! its kind of a scary thought thinking about all thats going on, its hard to believe we have made it this far. i really think we need to find a way to clean this mess weve made up and turn this year around!
These pictures are preety funny on how they relate to hard times!I think that the first picture is relation to the economy and how crazy the times are now. I hope by the end of 2009 that we will hopefully have everything under control. With the new president comming ,less than a month I hope he makes some changes for the better.I think this is a perfect oppurtunity for the new president to come in with a fresh start and plan out some wonderful new plans and ideas on what we should do. I think this is the perfect picture to explain whats going on in our country and the world.
this comment is referring to the first picture. the poor little boy crossed out the word happy because he is not happy with the world, and neither is anyone else. he crossed it out to make it say hope we make it through the new year because with the economy and new president and gaza war and stuff, the world is changingg.
My internet has been down and this is my first post of the new year. I think that the cartoons each tell of something horrible that has happened right before 2009 . The first one is more about the economy and how we are all hoping it will be repaired before the end of ‘09 and we can have nothing bad happen. Also i think it is showing how in these times we are down-sizing and it is comparitive to other parties.
In class today your showed us the second picture in class and told us it was a Jewish law ( an eye for an eye) and the Isrealites are revenging what happened.
The third one is represebting that thew new year should be put out of its misery by the old year since the global economy is
failing.
The other two are self explainitory but i really hope that with everything that is going on in the US, the economy, the new president, and the wars, so far for a new year 2009 is starting horribly and i hope it gets better. Last year has caused do much damage to everyone’s spirits, but this year should put some people on the right track ti have a happy new year!
The cartoons realy show that the many wars that we involved in (fighting or not fighting) are just a big mess and that all there is is constant ighting.
the cartoons in general show what kind of times we live in violence in america has escalated gratfully since bush toook office in 2001 and america’s position globally as well. I think anyone can say that Bush has to be the weakest president we have ever had with the possible exceptions of his own father former president
George H W Bush and Jimmy Carter. Our economic situation is also well i guess the only word i can use is terrible, its worse than the crash of 29 its going to affect this country for genertions to come not only is President bush weak in diplomatic areas and foreign policy but he is without a doubt extremely weak when it comes to Economics. So was his father though thats why Bill Clinton got elected president in 92. Although Ross perot did help Clinton win big in the electoral college and so did bush’s decision of keeping Quayle on the Republican ticket
I know that all of the news stories that I read weren’t good news. I think the “Hope we make it through the new year cartoon” shows that the cartoonist doesn’t think 2009 will be an easy year. Already early into the year there is the conflict in Gaza. Our country is making a transition into a new president which is difficult. 2009 may be an interesting year.
I agree with cartoon 2, I don’t think we should be fighting in Iraq.
“Hope we make it through the new year cartoon” the boy in the picture probably doesnt think the world will make it out of this year . with the nbew president coming in this is a difficult time but i think the us will get through it.
Hey Mrs. Buell
I think that the first picture is trying to say that with all the hardships and economic trouble we have had in 2008, 2009 will be very interesting!
For cartoon 2… The picture is referring to the bombing in the Gaza Strip by Israel. Israel does not like the Hamas, and they want to eliminate them. The eye is a symbol of Israel retaliating on the Gaza Strip. I hope in 2009 there are no new wars between countries. I guess everyone will just have to make it through the New Year.
these pictures are funny and will show people in the future just how bad the economy is now. we always look at political cartoons in class and they help us learn about the past. these cartoons will help future historians understand the hardship every american faces in the present. hopefully the economy will improve but it will probably not be in 2009 unfortunately
These pictures are very interesting, because people are usually very optimistic about the new year, but with all the problems in the world people are dreading the new year. The beginning of 2009 does look like it is going to be rough, with the downward economy, and war in Iraq. I think towards the end of the year things will start to turn around with Obama’s plan is put into action. It doesn’t matter what year it is we are always goin to have problems, some worse then others. We will get through this year no matter what we always have.
The “Hope we make it through the new year cartoon” is about the economy, and how people are hoping to fix it and repair it during this new year. 2009 might not be the easiest year for the United States, with all of the changes that are presently being made. And to begin the new year, there is a problem in Gaza. The US needs to make a smooth transition with the presidents, in order to begin the repairing of our economy. These cartoons really show the struggles that the United States is currently going through. They do a good job of portraying the changes that are occurring.
The first picture is kind of funny, in a way. 2008 wasn’t the most successful year. With the war, stock markets, and the trouble in the east it wasn’t very good. Hopefully 2009 will be better, with a new president who knows how things will be this time. Maybe Obama will do good, and not automatically draft us all into a citizen war and take away our parent’s 4o1k.
I think the last cartton is trying to say that sionce Obama hasn’t said anything about Gaza being bombed. I agree with him though because if he makes a bad name for himself now no one will agree with him.
ello Ms. Buell these are some interesting pieces of cartoons. I hope that we can make it through the year with this messed up ECONOMY. Maybe Barack will do something about it but it sounds like hes not going to.
From,
Mr. Govna
hey ms.buell ! i’m commenting on the fourth cartoon , which is the one guy trying to kill another, while theyre both falling off a cliff. I think this cartoon is saying that even though one country might be winning in a war, the other country still doesn’t think about what consquences might happen . Both of the people in the cartoons think theyre winning , but they both will be killed because theyre falling off .
I think one and three are similar. The world has gone through such a challenging time last year and the past few years that people are not sure of their futures, they are depressed and the economy is about to blow up at any minute. We need to follow Obamas lead to get ourselves back on track for our future and our children’s future.
