A Doll’s House, Connections to Today?

Published by buell at 5:32 pm under History

So, obviously the purpose of the Doll’s House assignment was to help you understand the condition of women in the 1800s and also to showcase how a certain author, Henrik Ibsen, spoke out in favor of women’s rights.  However, I wonder if there are any lessons from this story that we can relate to in 2008?  Secondly, I wonder if any of you can think of an artist or author or performer who uses his or her talents to not only entertain, but also to speak out against a social injustice.

Many of U2’s songs are speaking out for various groups of people that are experiencing hardships. They raise a ton of money for multiple charities and organizations that help make the world a better place.

I agree with cadence’s comment. U2 does a lot of money raising funds for charity to promote the awareness of aids, etc. They have a strong impact on peoples realizations of what is going on in our world today.

I think A Doll’s House relates to the world now because women are still quietly below men. We were talking in Ms. Demas’ class about how when addressing someone people still say, “Mr. SoandSo and his wife,” which is demeaning.

    I think that…
1 Yes, A Doll’s House, is a good envisionment of the injustice of 1800’s women. But A Doll’s House is very boring and tedious to read.
2 In today’s culture artists are more likely to speak out again this sort of things than in the 1800’s. Like you said in class, Ibsen had to rewrite his ending to get approval by his audience.
3 Cadence is right U2 does sing about causes for many for groups of people.

Also the band Say Anything wrote a song about the injustices that his grandparents went through during the holocaust it is called, “Alive With the Glory of Love.”

But really if this was not written would history really change that much, as much as the butterfly effect entitles?

Orson Scott Card’s Empire is the most admirable paradigm for your question for he not only entertained with his suspense; he entertained with his entruiging approach to the social injustices of the citizens of our time.

Yes, U2 is a very good example…we will revisit the question of celebrities using their prominence to promote a cause, so keep thinking of other examples.

Thanks for the link Kurt….I think that was Anthony Hopkins as Torvald Helmer! I hope you all appreciate how lucky you have it to have the internet as an instant homework helper!

Andrew!!! Welcome back to the blog…..I was very lonely here blogging all by myself :(

I do agree with Gianna, at work women tend to have lower salaries than men, or they are not treated with equality.
I also agree with Cadence, U2 IS singing ’bout causes for many groups of people, unfortunate the money their are making its not enough for all the things that have been going on lately….
